HMH K-12 Digital Learning Architecture: The Responsive Content Engine (RCE) eReader allows students to interact with K-12 learning content in a flexible, intuitive experience.
When users select content, they view it in the Responsive Content Engine (RCE) — a next generation responsive eBook reader which enables “ePub3 Standard” functionality (Audio – for text narration, text highlighting, note-taking, bookmarking, etc.) in a fully responsive viewer.
The RCE ’remembers’ what a student has done in the content, and can communicate with parent platform services for Assignments, Assessments, Grading etc.
User testing
Students of all grade levels were tested for their ability to complete high-value tasks quickly and easily in the RCE
This process ensured that evidence-based design decisions were made when refining the experience. It also drove simplicity, as the more the experience was streamlined (interface elements were removed) the more users could complete tasks and feel ‘in control’ of the experience to an increasing degree
“Smart” Digital content containers
The Flexible Template Content Architecture incorporates “containers”. Each follows set styles, and responsive design rules, and each has its own reference color across the authoring environment
Once content is placed inside a container it ‘knows’ how to display and behave correctly – on any device – in either landscape or portrait mode
Drag-and-drop content creation
Generic static and interactive patterns are sourced from an “Experience Library” pool and are populated with content and styled for a specific K-12 program and age group
Patterns join text, video and other media in the Habitat authoring environment – where content is dragged into a flexible container on screen that determines how it will display and behave relative to other screen content in a responsive environment, across devices and formats. Fully responsive interactive content is output to ePub3 Standard eReaders (RCE)
